Underarm whitening cream

The area of your arms stretching from just above the elbow up to the armpits is sometimes darker than the rest of the arm due to several factors, chief among which is chafing caused by friction against the fabric of the sleeves, or skin against skin, as well from shaving.

When should you use underarm whitening cream?

You do not, or rather you should not, use underarm lightening cream for when it comes time to make a fashion statement – for example because you have bought a new outfit and the dark armpits are all of a sudden unsightly. Irregular use of a product for lightening dark armpits tends to entrench the melanin pigmentation deeper under your skin, a situation that makes it that much harder for the cream – any cream you eventually choose to use – to work quickly and effectively. If you know that from time to time you might find yourself in situations where you have to expose your underarms or armpits (as most of us do, I should think) it would be a good idea to do some armpit whitening regularly, in addition to taking preventative measures of course, as we will see shortly.

Which underarm whitening cream should you use?
There are many good underarm lightening creams out there and which of them you choose to use will usually boil down to taste and, of course, your wallet. But, whatever your circumstances, you should select a topical cream that is formulated with mild ingredients and one that contains no alcohol or spirit and definitely no TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) or Hydroquinone! We will discuss safe and unsafe skin bleaching ingredients later but Alpha Arbutin, Glycolic Acid and Kojic Acid or their derivatives work best for sensitive skin such as that in the armpits.

A word about skin lightening
Before you go out and buy a product to whiten your underarms take the time to read the following  paragraph so you will know what to look out for and what to avoid. Read the fine print on the underarm whitening cream you decide to buy and check the ingredients. The underarm whitening cream should have ingredients that whiten or bleach the skin as well as those that dissolve the pigmentation concentrated in black spots below the surface layers of the skin, in addition to those others that give it mild, anti-inflammatory properties.

The use of skin lightening creams or other formulations such as gels and lotions goes back a long way. Skin whitening creams in general are used to brighten skin tone by removing blemishes, spots or pigmentation caused by certain medications; or exposure to chemicals as well as very localized discoloration that may come as a result of acne and pimples, melasma, liver spots, etc. How the underarm whitening creams work is that chemical ingredients in them attack and dissolve melanin, which is the pigment that gives us our skin color: the more melanin there is in the layers of the skin the darker the skin will be. The chemistry of the process is still being researched and is currently only half understood, which is why there are so many different formulations of skin lightening creams out there in the stores. But basically what they all do, or try to do, is to revitalize the skin cells, dissolve the melanin, or cause it to disappear, and /or slow down its formation in the layers of your skin. Down the years a number of chemicals have been tried, with varying degrees of success.

Mercury and its derivatives were once used but were discontinued when research showed that they were responsible for causing some forms of cancer. Hydroquinone and Niacinimide are two others that were discontinued. (Hydroquinone is even banned in some countries). Currently most mild skin lightening creams are formulated with ingredients obtained from natural plant sources. Glycolic Acid is extracted from sugar cane or sugar beet, Alpha Arbutin form blueberry or bearberry and Kojic Acid from malting rice. Another natural ingredient that is gaining wide-spread use is licorice extract (as popularized by the LicoWhite series from Godiva).

Those formulations intended for application to sensitive skins will usually also include anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant additives like tyrosine, glyceride and Vitamin C that work to counterbalance the irritant side-effects of the active ingredients (most of which are acidic).

How to use underarm whitening cream
Most skin brightening products are recommended to be used at night, although in some cases using them twice a day is sometimes recommended for achieving faster results. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. A good underarm whitening cream will usually have ingredients in it that work to assist it to penetrate down to the deeper layers of your skin and you do not really need to rub it in: a gentle caressing motion with your finger tips is enough for it to start working its magic. Some creams for lightening dark skin may sometimes be sold together with a skin lightening soap. In that case wash the underarms first with the soap and apply the cream. I do not know if there are rules on this, but in case you are using another skin bleaching cream for the whole body you should apply the topical cream for the underarms first then work around it when you apply the skin bleaching product, or alternately – that is, apply one at night and the other during the day. Avoid applying two different creams together on the same area of skin.

Underarm whitening cream is for those occasions when you need to brighten the skin tone in the area around the armpits. This area is particularly prone to the condition for most people, especially if you are overweight or sweat a lot. The type of fabric you usually wear may also be to blame for the condition. Some fabrics that have a high percentage of synthetic fibers like polyester aren’t very breathable and are notorious for making you sweat, especially in mild or warm weather. Also, if you are particularly prone, you might consider avoiding tight-fitting garments and hard-wearing fabrics, or those that have a rough texture. As for the lightening treatment, the skin whitening results will usually take a bit of time; from a week to three weeks is normal, depending of course on the cream you use.
